Disney Reveals New Avengers Ride Featuring a Reinvented Tower of Terror Experience

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror awed and thrilled Walt Disney World guests upon its debut in Florida in 1994. Here was a drop tower ride that bypassed typical amusement park expectations to weave an intricate story into its thrills. Since then, Walt Disney Imagineers have adapted the ride system to tell more stories, like Tokyo DisneySea’s tale of a cursed idol and explorer Harrison Hightower and Disney California Adventure’s music-filled romp starring the Guardians of the Galaxy. Now, a different group of Marvel superheroes will have their turn at an entirely new version of Disney’s famous drop tower. New discoveries about this future ride were just shared.

An all-star roster of Avengers will star in a ride that leverages Disney’s Tower of Terror ride system in a completely new way. Disney unveiled new details about the attraction to an arena full of theme park superfans. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including Disneyland cracking down on guest behavior causing safety issues and Disney World expanding a free airport perk beyond value resorts.

Disney is building this attraction from scratch, rather than converting a previous version of a ride into a new experience. In this way, it differs from Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission – BREAKOUT! at Disney California Adventure, which transformed The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror into a Marvel attraction. Hong Kong Disneyland has never had an attraction with a Tower of Terror ride system.

Disney first announced this attraction in 2024 and revealed new information at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2026.

While the new attraction’s ride system will physically be similar to Tower of Terror and Guardians of the Galaxy, its function within the fictional narrative is very different. In Tower of Terror and Guardians of the Galaxy, the elevator only ever moves through space that is supposed to be an elevator shaft in the story. Its story and reality are the same. Disney built an elevator, and the characters in the ride perceive that mechanism as an elevator. That won’t always be the case for the new Avengers drop tower ride, and the new interpretation of the technology is very cool.

Hong Kong’s Avengers ride is a vertical journey across portals and into different Marvel realms, including Wakanda and Asgard. New concept art shows Doctor Strange opening portals that are visible above riders. This could mean that action is happening on the ceiling of the ride vehicle in addition to directly in front of it. That’s very different from Tower of Terror and Guardians of the Galaxy, and introduces a new component to this ride system.

The vehicle will still physically careen through an elevator shaft, but the shaft is now merely the technical expression of the story, something that we’re pretending is something else, rather than the literal thing that it is.

To think in comparisons to other Disney attractions, Incredicoaster at Disney California Adventure is a real-life roller coaster that’s also a roller coaster in the story, but Space Mountain at Disneyland is a real-life roller coaster that’s meant to be a rocket blasting through outer space.

Avengers Tower of Terror building

The drop tower ride will be part of what Disney referred to as a “pavilion.” This isn’t quite a full land, but what’s being built will amount to more than just the single ride. This expansion of the Stark Expo area of Tomorrowland will consist of the drop tower ride and a courtyard area featuring a large Quinjet, seen in the model pictured above and the concept art below.

The area in front of the Quinjet will serve as a place for guests to spot favorite Marvel superheroes in person. We could also see this being used for small shows.

This is designed with the character appearances in mind, which looks like a big improvement from how the Quinjet and characters are set up in Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure.

The ride building will be themed as the Avengers’ new Research Testing Lab, where Peter Parker is busy at work.

“Whenever you have powerful new tech, that’s bound to draw the interest of some evil forces, too, and that’s where the adventure really takes off,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige at D23.

This is one of several Marvel attractions under construction at Disney theme parks around the world. Disney California Adventure is expanding Avengers Campus with two new rides, including a multiverse battle against King Thanos. Shanghai Disneyland is introducing an entire Spider-Man land, complete with a new roller coaster.
