Disney is famous for its dark rides. They employ clever uses of light, projection, and other technology to make a scene really come to life during the ride. Of course, those rides are not always dark. They have work lights for cast members who need to do maintenance on the rides, and those work lights illuminate the entire space.
Sometimes, when a ride malfunctions or something goes wrong, those work lights are on during a ride-through, which gives those dark rides a whole new look and feel. We have a collection of ride-throughs with the lights on for you to check out! Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including guests saying the “pixie bounding” trend is crossing some boundaries and Disney using real ride parts from Soarin’ to make unique handbags.

6 Disney Rides With the Lights On
We have compiled a list of six Disney rides that guests rode with the lights on. Many of these ride-throughs will be videos of guests experiencing the ride with the lights on, but there are also some slideshows of images that you can really look closely at.

I started with Cosmic Rewind because it is one of my favorite rides at Disney World. This roller coaster relies heavily on darkness to really make it thrilling. Not being able to see the track means you cannot see what twist or turn will come next, which makes it all the more exciting. While it is surely still exciting with the lights on, it must be a unique, different experience with the lights on.

@waltdisneyworldparks 🚨 Lights-on moment alert! 🚨 It’s not every day you get to see Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT like this 👀, with the lights on! Usually, this ride is pitch black, filled with stars, planets, and epic cosmic energy. But when the lights come up, you can really see just how massive and detailed this coaster is behind the scenes. 🌌 This rare look shows the incredible track layout, the sheer scale of the show building, and all the behind-the-magic engineering that makes this attraction one of Disney’s most advanced ever. 💫 #CosmicRewind #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy #Epcot #disneyworld #wdw
Peter Pan’s Flight
Peter Pan’s Flight is another ride that relies heavily on lighting (or lack thereof) to really sell the illusion of flying high over London and Neverland. Without the intentional lighting, you can see just how minimal and small some of those sets really are. You can also get a good look at the barren walls you do not normally see when riding in the dark.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios is another one of my favorite rides, and this footage comes from the crawl into the elevator shaft before the drop sequence. Once again, this TikTok shows how bare this set is in the light, and proves just how much the dark adds to the spooky atmosphere.

@waltdisneyworldparks 🚨 Lights on alert at Tower of Terror! 🚨 Guests on this ride-through at Disney’s Hollywood Studios were treated to the extremely rare experience of Tower of Terror running with every light on from start to finish. This is one of those unusual moments that longtime fans dream of catching. Has anyone else ever seen Tower of Terror in full lights-on mode? 👀🎢🌩️ A special thanks to @.•°𝖌𝖍𝖔𝖚𝖑𝖎𝖊𝖇𝖗𝖎𝖊°•. for sending in this footage #disneypov #towerofterror #hollywoodstudios #waltdisneyworld
Haunted Mansion
This next video comes from the graveyard scene from the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland. As seen, this set is much more expansive than some of the others in this list, but that does make sense given the nature of the ride. Each Doom Buggy travels around the scene, so more detail is needed to make sure it is immersive from every angle. This is also a stationary shot of the graveyard scene, which lets you see even more of this set.

Indiana Jones Adventure
This full ride-through video of Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland shows the entirety of this dark ride with the lights on. There are several shots of the track, which you would not ordinarily see, as well as the set design. These settings are much more detailed than some of the other sets on Disney dark rides, so it is definitely interesting to see with the lights on.

Space Mountain
Space Mountain at both Disneyland and Disney World are both roller coasters in the dark. This first video is of the Disney World version, and it’s a little longer than some of the others because it is a full ride through instead of just one part. Again, seeing this ride with the lights on shows how sparse the interior of the ride is. It also shows just how close together the tracks are, which you do not see too clearly with the lights off. I have personally ridden this one with the lights on before, and it was truly a unique experience!
