Disney World Restaurant Closing Temporarily After Scaling Back Service

Closures are not super out of the ordinary at Disney World. They are typically for rides and attractions, but occasionally stores and restaurants will close as well. If they are scheduled, these closures tend to be for refurbishment or reimagining. Even if it is not for a refurbishment, scheduled closures tend to have reasoning behind the shutdown.

A restaurant at EPCOT will be closing temporarily, but this closure might raise some eyebrows due to the lack of concrete reasoning behind this planned closure. Keep reading to see which restaurant will be closing, and some speculation about why this is happening. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including changes to the menu at two Disney World restaurants and a brand new Haunted Mansion merchandise collection dropping soon.

EPCOT Restaurant to Close Temporarily

Coral Reef Restaurant at EPCOT serves mostly seafood and has a wrap-around view of the giant fish tank in the Seas pavilion. Guests can watch all the different sea creatures dwelling there right from their table while they dine. Despite this unique feature, Coral Reef Restaurant is not a go-to option for park-goers. The lunch service was removed months ago, making the restaurant dinner-only, which reflects the decline in popularity for this location.

Now, Disney has gone one step further. Coral Reef Restaurant will be temporarily closed beginning September 8. No official reopening date has been scheduled. The notice on Disney World’s website vaguely states that the restaurant is “expected to reopen later in 2026.”

There has been no official reasoning behind this closure, which is somewhat out of the ordinary for Disney. Scheduled closures such as this one typically give a reason, even if it is just “refurbishment” or something else equally broad.

This closure could be to cut costs during the month of September. Right between the busy summer season and the busy Halloween season, September is a notoriously slow time at Disney World, and it might not be worth it to operate an already unpopular restaurant. However, this is just speculation. Again, Disney has not made an official statement on why exactly Coral Reef Restaurant will be closing.

The annual EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival will be happening during September as well, so Coral Reef Restaurant could just sit empty while the festival occurs. With all the new booths showcasing different menu items not typically seen in the park, guests would likely rather sample from the booths rather than have a sit down meal at a restaurant they can dine at year-round.

A lot of the booths for the Food & Wine Festival tend to be in the World Showcase, so making the trek down to the Coral Reef Restaurant might not be worth it for some guests. The restaurant sits in an out-of-the-way spot, tucked near The Seas with Nemo & Friends, so it likely does not see much foot traffic except for guests who ride the ride or want to eat at the restaurant.

The Food & Wine Festival is one of the most popular festivals that EPCOT hosts, featuring several new food kiosks each with different menus, as well as concerts later in the evening. This year, the festival will run from August 27 to November 21. You can experience all of the food booths and the Eat to the Beat concert series with your park reservations. While a full menu for the festival has not been released, you can find the lineup and dates for the concerts here.
