Disney will schedule refurbishment for its rides to keep them in the best working condition for guests. Occasionally, these periods of down time will be extended if an issue arises or just to ensure that the attraction is safe for guests to enjoy. This extension was the case with one ride at Disneyland that recently closed for an extended period of time.
This attraction has been undergoing refurbishment for months now, with the end date pushed further and further back. Disney has now revealed an official reopening date for the ride on the calendar that seems to be sticking. Keep reading to see when it is expected to reopen, and a possible reason for this extended closure. Mickey Visit brings you the latest Disney news and planning resources, including which out-of-the-way Disney World restaurant is worth the trip and the changes Disney plans to make to classic rides to attract new visitors.

Pixar Pier Ride Reopening Soon After Long Closure
Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind has been closed for a majority of this calendar year. It originally closed from January 5 to January 22 for a scheduled refurbishment. Just a month later, it went down again for what was supposed to be a two-day follow up on February 27 and February 28.

However, this two-day closure has turned into a months-long closure, with the end date getting pushed back each day. Soon, Disney made the announcement that the ride would be closed for refurbishment with no reopening date scheduled. It was supposed to reopen in May, but that end date was also pushed back.
There is now an official reopening date for Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind. The ride is currently scheduled to reopen on June 18 based on the Disneyland refurbishment calendar. Beginning on that day, guests will be able to go to Pixar Pier and enjoy the gentle balloon basket ride again.
We expect that this time the refurbishment will stick because it has been on the calendar for multiple days. We waited a day or two to make sure that the refurbishment end date wasn’t going to change again before publishing this update.
Another popular spinning ride is currently closed nearby. The Silly Symphony Swings is also closed. See all the latest Disneyland ride closures here. Pirates of the Caribbean and the Matterhorn Bobsleds are also on the closure calendar currently.

These continuous refurbishment extensions are out of the ordinary for Disney rides. When a ride is scheduled for refurbishment, it is typically for general maintenance and upkeep to keep the ride in good operating condition. There is usually a plan going into these closures, so if there is an extension, it would likely be a short one.
There are two other types of ride closures apart from a scheduled refurbishment:
- safety and regulatory maintenance, which usually happens overnight
- response maintenance, the result of an unexpected issue during a theme park day
These ride closures are not planned, so they can potentially cause a closure to get extended. Disney has not made an official statement on if that is the case with Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind, but we can guess that some issues kept arising during the refurbishment process that kept the ride closed for much longer than anticipated. Read all about our update on how Disney is changing their ride maintenance.
But guests will not have to wait much longer to ride Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind again. The months-long closure will come to an end this week.
