Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Guide

One of the best additions ever made to the Universal Studios theme parks was The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando have areas dedicated to the Boy Who Lived. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is an immersive experience so that once fans step foot into the land, they will feel like they have stepped into the movies and books.

Universal Orlando has two Harry Potter themed lands: Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. Hogsmeade is located in Universal's Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida. The Hogwarts Express connects both of these Harry Potter themed lands- you will need a Park-to-Park ticket in order to ride though since it transports you between the two main theme parks at Universal Orlando.

Universal Studios Hollywood only has Hogsmeade but with a larger amount of shops to compensate for Hogsmeade being the main focus. Universal Studios Hollywood is a working studio and doesn't have the same capacity as Orlando to expand. Despite that, the experience of Hogsmeade at Universal Studios Hollywood is just as amazing and immersive as its counterpart in Florida.

Our guide covers everything you need to know about The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in both the locations in California at Universal Studios Hollywood and in Florida at Universal Orlando. From British dining options to magical rides to the castle of Hogwarts guests can partake in their own Harry Potter themed adventure.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Strategy Universal Harry Potter

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is extremely popular in both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando. If Harry Potter is a priority for you (and it should be if you're reading this guide!) you should prioritize your morning around this land! It will get busier as the day goes on and if you decide to go here first thing in the morning you can enjoy the land without bumping into other guests and really take in the details.

Universal Orlando Harry Potter Strategy

The Hogwarts Express is a must-see attraction. The train is how you get between the two parks within The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade. Guests must have a park to park ticket in order to enjoy the attraction. Now don’t make this mistake if you want to avoid riding without a long line! If you wait until the mid afternoon right when it would make sense to park hop you might end up with an extremely long line for the experience. On my visit to Universal Orlando my longest line with the Express Pass was actually for the Hogwarts Express because we went right at 2PM when the rest of the crowd was park hopping. Even if there's a long line, it's worth the ride. Plus the ride will be different each direction so make sure you ride it twice!

I personally loved our experience using Express Pass at Universal Orlando and found it worth it so we could choose to spend our morning enjoying the details of the land and saving the rides for the afternoon when the crowds picked up. If  it's in your budget, this is a great move so you can enjoy things at your own pace and then ride the attractions with Express Pass once things begin to get busy.

If attractions are your priority, you need to decide which park you want to start at and what ride is your top priority! In Universal's Islands of Adventure Park the most popular Harry Potter attraction is Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. This ride is the newest and since it's an outside ride you definitely want to ride it early in the day just in case it rains and has to close. If you use single rider you can save a lot of time with this one! One of the best rides at Universal Studios Florida is Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts so this is the ride you should prioritize.

Entrance to Diagon Alley at Universal Orlando

Universal Studios Hollywood Harry Potter Strategy

The must see Harry Potter attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood is Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and this is the ride you should focus on during your visit! The great thing about this ride is that it offers single rider and the single rider line can often get you on the attraction in less than 20 minutes so if this is an option that works for your group it's a great way to save time. On our last visit to Universal Hollywood my son and I ended up using single rider five times in a row (!!!) because the single rider line was basically a walk on. I felt a little dizzy afterwards but it definitely created a fun core memory for the both of us. Since this ride blocks your view of the person sitting next to you because of the way the shoulder restraints seat you, it really doesn't matter if you're sitting next to your party or not.

Ollivanders Universal

Ollivander's Wand Experience

This advice applies to both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando!

If you plan on watching the Ollivander wand show then you should go straight to Ollivander's first thing in the morning as the line for this will build and build throughout the day- it moves quite slowly too! Spend some time right afterwards with your wands (if you choose the interactive ones!) doing the spells around the park. Usually within two hours of park opening every ‘wand spot' will have a small line and won't be as immersive as doing them first thing in the morning before the land fills up.

The wizard leading the experience will choose one child to be the one to test out the wands to see which ‘wand chooses the wizard' and the room will interact with these choices. It's hard to say how they decide which child to pick. Some speculate they pick the child decked out in full Harry Potter wizard robes while others report it really doesn't matter and they'll pick any child in regular clothes with no merchandise gear. Kids can be disappointed if they're not chosen so it's best to prepare them for the likelihood this won't happen as the group they let in for each experience is around 20 people so the odds of being chosen aren't always in your favor. After the show you're directed into the shop to purchase your wand! If you want to just purchase a wand and skip the show, you can just enter the shop from the direct entrance. But if you're a Harry Potter fan, don't miss this show! It's a magical experience.

Universal Studios Wand Map

Each interactive wand comes with a wand map with the spells and locations

If you decide to purchase the interactive wand (price ranges around $50) it comes with a map of spells you can perform around both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. All you need to do is follow the motion on the map and bring to life little details around the park. For example, one spell will make an umbrella statue pour water down on the cement while another will make toys dance in a shop window. If there's one piece of Harry Potter merchandise you buy, this should be it! If you plan on spending some time with the interactive wand then you should devote a morning to this as the wand spots will become crowded in the afternoons with some even forming small lines.

Universal Harry Potter Guide

This is one of the wand locations, say the spell with the wave of the wand and water comes out of the umbrella!

On our last trip to Universal Orlando we went straight to Ollivander's since we had purchased Express Pass to tackle the rides in the afternoon and after we finished the wand experience, we took our interactive wands and spent time going through each spell on the map. This was a great strategy as most other park goers were focusing on rides so these little spots weren't crowded yet and we could really focus on the details without bumping into others.

harry potter universal review

Read my review of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter from a lifelong Harry Potter fan!

Wizarding World of Harry Potter Review

I have been a Harry Potter fan from the beginning like any stereotypical millennial. I was 11 years old when the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, was published in the United States and was instantly hooked. I read every single book the instant they were released, waking up at 5AM to wait in long lines outside book stores for each major book release and then holing myself up in my bedroom until I was finished reading. The same type of fandom followed with all the films, although I never quite had the same connection as I did to the books, but I loved them the same. So suffice to say, I have been a Harry Potter fan since the beginning.

I absolutely adore the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando. While the attractions focus heavily on theming towards the films, the lands themselves integrate a plethora of details from the books that readers will pick up on instantly. The balance between cannon with the books and films is wonderful in the way that it brings fans together. The dedication to detail is astounding that a Harry Potter fan, especially in Universal Orlando, could easily spend hours taking it all in and finding the references all around the land. You can see the love towards the story built into the immersive storytelling of the land that aims to transport fans straight into a world that many of us wanted to escape to as teens. The attractions succeed in mixing that same immersive storytelling by also bringing in a balance of thrill. Their top success in that category easily being the technology used in the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey attraction. It captures the heart of the adventures of Harry Potter by bringing in creatures of the films, villains and the heroes we adore while also not relying entirely on screens to do so.

If you are a devoted Harry Potter fan and are visiting Universal with the main goal of pursuing a day to immerse yourself in the world of Harry Potter, then I recommend Universal Orlando. While Universal Studios Hollywood is fantastic, it only focuses on Hogsmeade and you're missing out on the wonder of Diagon Alley along with three other major Harry Potter attractions including their newest attraction Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventures. Either way, if you're a fan of the books or films or both- you will love your visit to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter- Attractions

Both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando have fantastic Harry Potter themed attractions for guests to experience. These rides are extremely popular so we recommend going to these first thing in the morning as the lands typically fill up by the afternoon. As a huge Harry Potter fan, visiting both of these theme parks was a dream come true to experience everything from the books and movies first hand. The amount of detail Universal dedicates to these areas is absolutely incredible. If you have Harry Potter fans in your group then you need to dedicate some serious time to Harry Potter during your visit.

Attractions at Universal Studios HollywoodHarry Potter Forbidden Journey

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood has two themed attractions.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is the main stop attraction at this theme park. The queue to lead to this ride is an experience in itself as it winds its way through Hogwarts where you will past Dumbledore's office, a classroom featuring projections of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, the Fat Lady, the vials holding the house points, the Herbology garden, and more! The attraction takes you on a journey following Harry Potter and his friends using a combination of screen technology and classic dark ride technology.

The ride uses a robotic arm to transport guests on a bench that becomes magicked to fly by Hermione herself. The harness goes above your head, strapping you in, and leaving your feet dangling as you fly around Hogwarts and the Forbidden Forest. The ride does not go upside down although you do get shaken around quite a bit backwards and forwards. It's a fantastic ride- not to be missed! Must be 48 inches to ride.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Flight of the Hippogriff is the second ride you can find directly across from Hogwarts castle. This ride will take you on a spin through Hagrid's pumpkin patch. You'll pass by an animatronic Buckbeak the hippogriff and Hagrid's hut on your way to board the ride. This family friendly roller coaster spins and dives around Hagrid's pumpkin patch giving great views of the nearby Hogwarts castle. This is a short ride and a great starter coaster for small children. Must be 39 inches tall to ride.

Attractions at Universal OrlandoUniversal Orlando Harry Potter

The Wizarding World at Universal Orlando is split into two lands in both of the theme parks. Diagon Alley is found in Universal Studios Florida and Hogsmeade is in Universal's Islands of Adventure. The Hogwarts Express connects the two theme parks. Combined between both lands Universal Orlando has five attractions.

Escape from Gringotts

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts can be found in the Diagon Alley portion of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando. Guests will enter the Gringotts bank underneath the fire-breathing dragon in Diagon Alley. The queue on the way to the ride takes you through the bank's marble lobby where you can see the Gringotts goblins hard at work. The ride puts the guest in the role of having to escape the bank's strictest security measures. You will see Harry, Ron, and Hermione along the way along with some more sinister villains like Voldemort and Bellatrix. This is a 3-D/4-D track ride experience and guests must be 42 inches to ride.

Hogwarts Express

Hogwarts Express is the transportation that takes you back and forth between the two Universal Orlando theme parks. If you want to experience the Hogwarts Express, you need to have a park-to-park ticket since this is the transportation between the two theme parks. Catch your train in King's Cross Station and be sure to watch out the windows to see scenes reminiscent of the Harry Potter movies.

Forbidden Journey Universal

Universal's Island's of Adventure is home to both Flight of the Hippogriff and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Both of these rides are nearly identical to their Universal Studios Hollywood counterparts. The minimum height for Harry Potter and the Forbidden journey is 48 inches and 38 inches for the Flight of the Hippogriff.

Hagrids Motorbike Adventure

Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is also located in Universal's Islands of Adventure. This new ride takes guests into the Forbidden Forest and beyond the grounds of Hogwarts castle twisting past trees, magical creatures, and encountering pits of Devil's Snare. This freewheeling coaster is led by Hagrid and has been impressing guests with this combination of a thrill and dark ride.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter- HogsmeadeHogsmeade Harry Potter

Hogsmeade is the only land featured in both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando. Both of these lands are nearly identical as they both closely mirror the Harry Potter movies. For example, you will see similar dining and shopping options in both parks with only a little variation.

Dining OptionsButterbeer Universal

The main dining option in Hogsmeade is the Three Broomsticks which succeeds as being nearly identical in offered dishes and atmosphere as we saw in the Harry Potter movies and books. You can find Butterbeer here along with classic English dishes like fish & chips, shepard's pie, and dishes mentioned during the ‘Great Feast' in the Harry Potter books.

At the back of the Three Broomsticks, you can find Hogs Head for a drink of Butterbeer or some brews for the adult wizards.

You can also find Butterbeer and other snack/drink options at Magic Neep Cart on the way to Hogwarts castle.

Check out Universal Hollywood's dining site for menu information for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter here and Universal Orlando's here.

Christmas at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Christmas at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter offers many breathtaking sights to see that transport you right to the holiday celebrations in the movies and books. This is one of my favorite times of the year to visit because of the elaborate decorations! Since Hogsmeade is already themed with snowcapped buildings all the decorations fit in so naturally that it just works so well.

The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle features classic Christmas scenes from the books like the grand Christmas trees in Hogwarts Hall and the Yule Ball. You'll recognize key scenes from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire during this performance along with familiar holiday songs. This show will play nightly during the holiday season. Be sure to line up at least 30 minutes in advance to secure a good view!

Typically, the Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle show will begin in the evening and run every 30 minutes until park close. But on nights that the park closes early, there may only be one show. Make sure you find out the time in advance so you don't miss it!

Universal added the magic of nightly snowfall to Hogsmeade in recent years to the festivities making the experience even more magical.

Holiday decorations cover the land which fit in nicely especially in Hogsmeade with the already snow capped buildings. You will also see holiday displays in the shop windows.

Close up of holiday feast food at Universal Studios Hollywood

You can also find a variety of holiday sweets and seasonal drinks, such as warm butterbeer, around the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Christmas time. In the Harry Potter books, Harry and his friends enjoy a grand holiday feast at Hogwarts with all the fixings,

Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas; tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce — and stacks of wizard crackers every few feet along the table…

The Three Broomsticks typically offers a full holiday feast as a nod towards the Christmas dinner feast held at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series. The Holiday Feasts usually include a few courses such as butternut squash soup, beef wellington, oven roast turkey, sweet potato, dried cherries, and winter vegetables.

Universal Studios christmas: holiday frog choir

There's also some fun holiday entertainment such as holiday songs from the choir of Hogwarts students and their croaking frogs!

The holiday season is a great time to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal!
